Consumption of alcohol increases the risk of these 7 types of cancer.

Agency | New Study Shows Alcohol Consumption Increases Risk of 7 Types of Cancer

A study conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has revealed that alcohol consumption increases the risk of seven types of cancer. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy issued a warning on Friday, stating that drinking alcohol can elevate cancer risk. He also called for updated health warning labels on alcoholic beverages.

Alcohol consumption increases the risk of at least seven types of cancer:

* Mouth (Oral Cavity)

* Throat (Esophagus)

* Breast (in women)

* Liver

* Pharynx

* Larynx

How does alcohol cause cancer?

Mechanism 1: Alcohol produces acetaldehyde in the body, which damages DNA and increases cancer risk.

Mechanism 2: Alcohol increases oxidative stress, damaging DNA, proteins, and cells while also raising inflammation levels in the body, thereby increasing cancer risk.

**Mechanism 3: Alcohol alters hormone levels, including estrogen, which raises the risk of breast cancer in women.

Mechanism 4: Alcohol enhances the absorption of carcinogens in the body.

Higher alcohol intake increases cancer risk**

Alcohol affects both men and women, but the risk is higher in women.

About 5 out of 100 women who consume two drinks daily may develop cancer.

About 3 out of 100 men who consume two drinks daily may develop cancer.

Why women face a higher cancer risk from alcohol

Biological differences play a role.

Women generally have smaller body sizes, leading to higher blood alcohol concentration and greater cellular damage.

Women typically have more body fat, which intensifies alcohol's effects.

Alcohol increases breast cancer risk in women

About 4 out of 100 women who drink two glasses of alcohol daily may develop breast cancer. According to the latest IARC report, nearly 20% of the 75,000 annual global cases of lip and oral cavity cancers are linked to alcohol. Alcohol also reduces essential nutrients like B vitamins and folate, which help protect the body from cancer.

Alcohol is a powerful solvent, so when combined with other carcinogens like tobacco, it extracts higher levels of cancer-causing substances and amplifies their effects. This creates a dangerous mix, including smokeless tobacco products.
