Online media listing will no longer be done by the Press Council Nepal

Kathmandu. The Press Council Nepal has decided not to list and archive online media from now on. The council issued a notice on Sunday, clarifying that this task will not be done by it as per the legal provisions.

According to the council, the listing process was started by issuing a public notice on 16th Shrawan 2070 with the aim of organizing online media. After that, the Government of Nepal issued the ‘Online Media Operation Guidelines, 2073’ to be implemented from 7th Chaitra 2073, according to which the Press Council had been keeping records of online media.

According to the guidelines, the council had set standards and had been collecting a fee of Rs. 3,000 for archiving, listing and orientation.

However, after the recently issued ‘Act to Amend Certain Nepal Acts, 2082’ and the ‘Printing Houses and Publications (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2082’ published accordingly came into effect, the Press Council has stated that the archiving and listing of online media is no longer within the jurisdiction of the Press Council. The notice signed by Ram Sharan Bohara, Joint Administrative Officer and Joint Spokesperson of the Press Council, states, ‘Since there is no legal provision in the above-mentioned Act and Regulations for the archiving and listing of online media by the Press Council, this work is not done by the Press Council Nepal and is being published for the information of all concerned.’
