Kathmandu. The controversy that has arisen in the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) is still ongoing. Mahesh Shrestha, the president elected by the association's unity convention, has made final preparations to go to court against the 12th general convention planned by the Badri KC group, declaring it legally illegal.
According to Shrestha, the unity convention held in Baisakh is the legal and official convention of the association. The convention was held in the presence of a high-level coordination committee as per the mandate of the Supreme Court with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Law. "There is no legal basis for holding another convention after the recognized convention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been completed and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent a circulation to all embassies abroad that the Shrestha group is official," said President Shrestha.
He said that the 12th general convention planned by the KC group is illegal and does not receive institutional approval, and he will go to court again to prevent it. “We were forced to take the legal route because the institutional arrangements and legal process were being violated,” said Chairman Shrestha.
Meanwhile, the Badri KC faction has claimed that the general convention will not be postponed. KC group vice-chairman Hemraj Sharma has claimed through social media that preparations are underway for the 12th general convention.
The NRNA leadership dispute is still a matter of concern to the court. Several cases have been registered in the court regarding the leadership of the association. The Supreme Court has scheduled the hearing of six of them for August 22. The hearing on that day is expected to have a decisive impact on the legitimacy of the upcoming general convention and the status of both groups.
At present, both Mahesh Shrestha and Badri KC are claiming to be the president of the NRNA. On the one hand, the Shrestha faction considers the general convention held in Baisakh to be legitimate. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Talukdar have already given them official recognition, while the KC group has claimed that it has reached the final stage of preparations for the 12th general convention in October.
It is likely that parallel activities of both parties will continue until the final decision of the court is made. The delay in the court's decision has also brought the leadership dispute in the NRNA to the surface. Despite repeated attempts to reach an agreement between the two groups, a decision has not been made due to the ego struggles of some people in the KC group.
Currently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Minister Arju Rana Deuba have recognized the Shrestha group as official, while Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has given internal support to the KC group.
