Kathmandu. A ruckus has erupted within the party after a Maoist Center MP was scheduled to travel to Thailand and Cambodia for a controversial program of the Badri KC group of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA). This has created a situation where Prachanda's secretariat had to intervene in this matter.
Central member and member of the House of Representatives, Madhav Sapkota, was scheduled to travel to 'Subodh' to participate in the program scheduled in Thailand and Cambodia, but it was postponed at the last minute.
He was going to go there without coordinating with the party itself. However, the Maoist leadership itself has not accepted the Badri KC group. In such a background, the problem arose when he tried to go based on his own decision, contrary to the party's policy.
CPN Maoist Center's Asia Province Committee Chairman Shani Kumar Oli said that the trip has been postponed after all the issues were clarified. 'Honorable Madhav Sapkota was not informed that the program was unofficial and controversial. His visit has been postponed after he was informed of everything,' he said. It is reported that after news of his visit was reported in the media, the secretariat of Maoist Center Chairman Prachanda took necessary action and postponed the visit.
The KC group's NRNA is holding separate conferences in Thailand and Cambodia. The second international youth conference is being held in Bangkok, Thailand on March 15 and 16. Similarly, the 10th Asia-Pacific regional conference is being held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on March 18 and 19. Sapkota had also accepted that he would participate in both conferences. After the visit was postponed, he was not contacted.
Campaigners say that the KC faction is holding the conference amid the ongoing dispute within the NRNA and the mandate given by the Supreme Court to hold a unity convention. In the context of the NRNA dispute, former president Shesh Ghale has been given the responsibility of holding a unity convention as per the mandate given by the Supreme Court on Chaitra 21.
The high-level committee led by Ghale has been warning the KC faction not to engage in any activity that would disrupt unity, and has been claiming that the conferences held under various names are illegal.
Binod Kunwar, a member of the High-Level Committee of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, said that the conferences to be held in Thailand, Cambodia and Malta in the name of the NRNA are illegal. Accordingly, the committee has also written to the branches of the concerned countries.
‘You are aware that the High-Level Committee of the Non-Resident Nepali Association is moving forward with the aim of contributing to the unity and empowerment of Nepalis around the world to make the international convention to be held in Kathmandu from May 3 to 5, 2025, a success. The NCC here has been instructed not to hold any activities other than the convention-focused program, but since it has been reported that other activities are being held there, those programs should be stopped immediately and the High-Level Committee should be informed,’ said the letter sent by the committee’s coordinator Ghale to the Thailand branch of the NRNA.
The letter also warns that if the directive is not followed, it will be recommended for action, including the conclusion that the directives of the Supreme Court's mandate and the Judgment Implementation Directorate have not been followed. Kunwar said that a letter to this effect has also been sent to Cambodia and Malta. The KC group is holding a Europe regional conference in Malta in the near future.
In accordance with the Supreme Court's decision, Ghale, who is a member of the committee, has been absent even when the committee meetings are held.
Similarly, Ghale has already announced the general convention of unity in the coming May. In such a situation, a few weeks ago, the Supreme Court's Judgment Implementation Directorate had also written to the NRNA secretariat and directed Ghale to give the responsibility of the office.
There has been controversy in the NRNA since the 10th general convention almost 4 years ago. Meanwhile, KC was elected president amid controversy from the NRNA's general convention held last year. However, the presidential candidates at that time, RK Sharma and Mahesh Shrestha, rejected the results of the vote, claiming that his leadership was rigged.
Due to the same controversy, even the then Chairman of the Maoist Center and the then Prime Minister Prachanda did not go to the closing ceremony. Since then, even those close to the Maoists have been raising questions about the KC-led working committee, while most of the Congress has not supported him. In such a background, there was a ruckus when Sapkota was about to go to the program. In fact, the Maoists were not even present at the general meeting held by the KC party earlier. The ruckus occurred when the Maoists tried to challenge Prachanda when the Maoists did not accept the Badri group. The Maoists' migration committee had informed the leadership about this. It is said that some ministers, including ministers from the Congress, were going to attend the program. However, the high-level committee has warned them not to participate in the program as the program is illegal and will lead to contempt of court.
